Valerie Eve deGroot is a Chicago-based actor, writer, fine artist, and director. Selected credits include Fefu and Her Friends (Cecilia Johnson), Love and Information (First Actor), and Henry IV Part 1 (Prince Hal). She had her Chicago directing debut in 2020 with the Women’s Theatre Alliance New Play Festival. She is passionate about exploring the thin line between comedy and tragedy in her exploration of human foibles. Her works investigate emotional isolation, mental illness, and struggles with the overwhelming, generational anxiety of our times. Between these she likes to sprinkle in jokes, because who doesn’t like jokes? When she’s not acting, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s painting. And when she’s not doing all of those things, she’s yelling passionately about music, going for runs, and asking to pet other people’s dogs.

Val deGroot is a multi-media artist based in Chicago, Illinois. She is a writer, puppeteer, and puppet fabricator. She exposes the psychological and social ramifications of living in an extended hyper-reality in her writing. She proposes alternative futures through her puppets. She loves to disturb a bit. She is inspired to resuscitate the universal human experience on stage, to build bridges across highly atmomizated sub-cultures, and to create collaborative creative spaces where social connection and community engagement are emphasized. She’s here to combat alienation and beat down hopelessness. She is fascinated by the internet, psychology, and ecology. She loves birds. Her fabrication work prioritizes secondhand materials, and sustainable practices to create puppets that battle it out in whimsical and bizarre arenas. She is medium funny.
